Putnam County was named for Israel Putnam, a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War.

The County is home to the largest indoor Buddha statue in the Western Hemisphere, in the Chuang Yen Monastery, in Kent. The monastery has the only library in the United States specializing in Buddhist history.
